Starfish Initiative
This year, Starfish Initiative continued to move forward and stood ready to increase our support of scholars. Our vision included partnering with more community organizations to better serve scholars and families. Looking forward, we recognize that our work is far from finished. We will continue to innovate, adapt, and collaborate to ensure our programs remain relevant, effective, and sustainable. It is with great pride and gratitude that I reflect on the achievements and impact we have made together over the past year.

Starfish Initiative
Starfish was founded in 2003 to provide one-on-one mentoring to Marion County teens who participate in 21st Century Scholars. Since that time, Starfish has helped thousands of 21st Century Scholars realize their dream of going to college. While we help hundreds every year, there are thousands of Indianapolis teens that we have yet to reach.
The Starfish mentoring process significantly increases a Scholar’s success through one-onone mentoring. I am sure that you can recall a significant person in your life who formally or informally provided critical guidance when you were most in need. The success rate of a “mentored scholar” far exceeds that of scholars without a mentor. What’s more, a scholar who goes on to complete a degree significantly improves the lives and dynamics of their entire family.

Third Edition
As Starfish Initiative braced for the impact of COVID-19, our team seamlessly transitioned to a virtual atmosphere to ensure our scholars and their families had the support they needed during this unprecedented time. Thanks to our 2 Gen Initiative, “Starfish Generation+”, participating scholars and their families have been connected to wraparound services and resources needed to achieve their educational and career goals. This has in turn led to even better support of the scholars and helping them to achieve their educational, career/employment goals.
