Starfish Initiative Celebrates 16 Years of Service and Names
Macy’s, Inc. CFO, Paula A. Price Mentor of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS –Starfish Initiative will hold its 2019 Shining Star Celebration on Thursday, August 29, 2019. Starfish is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing Marion County high school graduation success and college matriculation rates among low-income students through its acclaimed mentorship model.
The 2019 Shining Star Celebration will highlight the success of Starfish Initiative’s comprehensive one-to-one mentoring approach for academically promising yet vulnerable teens residing within Marion County. As Starfish looks to celebrate 16 years of serving Marion County teens, the event will recognize the 2019 Mentor of the Year, Paula A. Price, CFO of Macy’s, Inc. Price is responsible for leading the company’s finance, accounting, investor relations and internal audit functions. Prior to joining Macy’s, Inc. she was a full-time senior lecturer at Harvard Business School. “Starfish is delighted to recognize Paula A. Price as an exemplar and inspiration to the 475 college-educated Indianapolis volunteers who selflessly mentor our 475 high potential yet vulnerable teens to overcome the barriers of poverty and become the first in their families to attend college,” said Gisele Garraway, President & CEO of Starfish.
“A meaningful mentorship can make a world of difference to a young person. A mentor can show you a credible path and can often help lead you towards career success and stability in your life. I’m grateful for the many mentors I’ve had throughout my life who have helped me get to where I am, and I’m passionate about paying that gift forward,” said Price.
The event will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Indianapolis Public Library. The evening will feature a VIP reception, “Are You Smarter Than a Starfish” challenges and promises to inspire and entertain. Dave Ricks, President & CEO of Eli Lilly and Company, Teresa Lubbers, Commissioner for the Indiana Higher Education Commission and Pat Roe, Vice President of Philanthropy for Strada Education Network will serve as the event’s co-chairs. RVT6’s Marc Mullins will emcee the event. Sponsors for the 2019 Shining Star Celebration include IU Health, Strada Education Network, Eli Lilly and Company, Corteva, PNC Bank and Staples.
Starfish Initiative pairs academically promising Scholars facing unearned adversity with a college-educated Mentor. Scholars begin the program as high school freshmen. With the focus on college and career, Starfish has built a track record of success over the last 15 years: 100 percent of Scholars who finish the four-year program graduate high school, 98 percent go on to college, and in the past 6 years, 78 percent are in pursuit of or have earned post-secondary degrees.
