Starfish Initiative is ushering in 2019 with a bang. Starfish has announced 8 new members will join its Board of Directors.
Joining the Board of Directors are William E. Padgett of Barnes & Thornburg, Karen Daughtery of TCC Wireless, Tonya Lengar Sanders of OneAmerica Financial Partners, Inc., Gisela Miller, Retired, Norman “Tom” Funk of Krieg DeVault LLP, Dan Nierste of the Morales Group, Monique Jackson of JPMorgan Chase, and Craig Fortner of First Internet Bank. “We are very fortunate to have each of these accomplished professionals join Starfish in its mission to talented yet vulnerable high schoolers in Marion County. ”, Gisele Garraway, President and CEO.
William E. Padgett - Bill is a partner in the Litigation Department of Barnes & Thornburg LLP representing clients in product liability and toxic torts, premises liability, insurance coverage and procurement claims, and a variety of commercial claims. Padgett received his B.A. magna cum laude from Wabash College and J.D. cum laude from Indiana University – Bloomington. He is a long-time past board member of The Julian Center domestic violence shelter/agency and long-time current board member of the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and handles pro bono family law cases for battered women.
Karen Daugherty – VP of Data, Reporting & Analytics for TCC Wireless, Karen is focused on modernizing the environment to provide a modern, retail-scalable D,R,&A platform to help drive TCC stores success. Prior to TCC, Karen worked at Allegion. Karen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems from the University of Cincinnati, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Anderson University. She’s been actively involved as a mentor with the Starfish Initiative since 2012, most recently with her amazing Starfish scholar, Shampaigne Barton who is an amazing sophomore at Ball State University. Karen is also actively engaged in Toastmasters, DAMA, TDWI, Signature Leaders, Women in Technology, and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Tonya Lengar Sanders – Tanya is an Indiana native completing her undergraduate degree at Purdue University and completed her juris doctorate at Indiana University – Mauer School of Law. An attorney with OneAmerica Financial Partners, parent company to American United Life Insurance Company for over 13 years, she volunteers with organizations and events that develop and encourage women and minorities to excel in all walks of life.
Gisela Miller – Formerly serving as the President and Chief Financial Officer for D-A Lubricant Co., Gisela earned both a B.A. and MBA from the University of Indianapolis. She has also served as Parish Council Member and President for St. Gabriel and the Archangel Catholic Church and was a member of the planning committee for Starfish Initiative’s 15th Shining Star Celebration.
Norman “Tom” Funk - Tom is a graduate of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in
Bloomington and the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He is a member of the litigation practice group at Krieg DeVault LLP in Indianapolis. Tom is also actively involved as a mentor with Starfish Initiative.
Dan Nierste - Dan is the Chief Strategy Officer for the Morales Group. Dan spent time at Agie Charmilles, where he was president with responsibility for the “Americas” region, and Knowledge Services and dotStaff, where he served as EVP. Over the course of his career, Dan has had P&L responsibility as the CEO of several multinational companies. Having earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Indiana University and his MBA from the University of Chicago his favorite quote is, “Everyone can be great, because anybody can serve." - Martin Luther King Jr.
Monique Jackson - Monique Jackson is an analyst in the Middle Market Banking Group at JPMorgan Chase, covering the Indiana Market. Monique has been with the firm for over nine years and has worked in the Middle Market and Retail lines of business. Monique holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN. She also holds an MBA in Business Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Craig Fortner - Craig is the VP of Internet Technology for First Internet Bank, and was formerly the SVP, Sr. Service Delivery Manager for Bank of America. Fortner graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelors in Management and Management Information Systems.

Starfish Initiative pairs academically promising Scholars facing unearned adversity with a college-educated Mentor. Scholars begin the program as high school freshmen. With the focus on college and career, Starfish has built a track record of success over the last 15 years: 100 percent of Scholars who finish the four-year program graduate high school, 98 percent go on to college, and in the past 6 years 78 percent are in pursuit of or have earned postsecondary degrees.
